Highland Village Safest City in Texas…Again!

by Jay Myers on November 25, 2008

in Living in Highland Village

This fall Highland Village in Denton County, on the shores of Lake Lewisville, for the 7th consecutive year was named the “Safest City in North Texas” and for the 2nd year was named the “Safest City in Texas” with a population over 10,000 based on information accumulated from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report.

Critics, some neighboring officials, and maybe a few residents touted this designation would be a thing of the past; with the influx of commercial and retail development we have experienced here in this small community. In some cases they may have good reason to believe so, with a Wal-Mart Supercenter, and a  AMC Cineplex and over 100 new retail stores, and restaurants it was sure to bring in all types of people from neighboring communities. As they say…

“with the good comes the bad”

But, our Wal-Mart, for the time being, is a one-of-a-kind, and I have never seen public officials (elected, or appointed) so involved in the success, and prosperity of local business in any city I have ever lived in, These are GREAT things!

As a volunteer with the Highland Village Police Department Auxiliary and Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) and seeing first hand how proactive, and progressive Chief O’bara and his staff are about crime prevention I never doubted the nay-sayers would be proven wrong.

So even with all the retail growth, and increased population on November 12, Chief Ed O’Bara accepted the 2008 Community Policing Award for populations under 20,000, at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police. The Highland Village Police Department received the prestigious award for its “Value-Based” Policing Model.

A preliminary judging panel of 27 and a final panel of seven reviewed nearly 100 nominations from the United States and several foreign countries.  The Winners are examples of community policing best practices.  Entries demonstrate the meaningful change that can occur when law enforcement officials and their communities are empowered to utilize all available resources for building partnerships, solving problems, and preventing crime.

So, I feel the reason all this is so relevant to real state is simple. When looking for a new home, it is important to know where you choose to live that your home, property and family are going to be safe. Highland Village is a excellent example of a city doing their part of making that happen.

Homes in Highland Village can range anywhere from $80 a square foot up to over $350 a square foot, so there is something for everyone. The schools are highly rated, and the shopping and conveniences are on par with neighboring communities of Flower Mound and Lewisville. The convenience to I-35E, and the new light rail system coming in 2010-2011 will continue to get even better. In closing, if your looking to buy or sell a home or any real estate in Highland Village, Flower Mound, Corinth, or anywhere in Denton County.

I do hope you will call, or contact me for more information.
